Chapter 10: Day 97 of the Zombie Apocalypse

I force myself to slow down and then stop and bend over, panting, feeling a burning in my lungs and throat as I hack out some mucus. It’s been a little while since I’ve run that hard and it shows. The perils of office work, even when you’re a zombie, shows when you have to really book it from your enemies.

“Sam, you’ve been shot! It looks like it’s a graze, so you’re lucky, but you’re bleeding,” Sheila says.

“Y-yeah,” I gasp. “Ran into Michelle.”

“I wonder how they got in the base so fast. Of course it doesn’t help that the zombies have left, but Michelle and her squad are cutting through the Zombii Co. troops like they’re Swiss cheese,” Alisha says.

“My fault the zombies left,” I say and force myself to stand up and breathe slowly. “I got into a telepathic duel with the other telepaths and that’s why the zombies are leaving. We need to get out of here too. What’s been the hold up?”

“Trevor got shot in the stomach and Tonya’s been treating him,” Alisha says and I see a mixture of anger and fear on her face.

“How’d he get shot and why?”

“When we came to get Jean, some of the Zombii Co. soldiers started firing at us because they didn’t recognize us and he was in the way of one of the bullets.”

“That’s a funny way of putting it,” I reply. No one ever gets in the way of a bullet.

“H-he threw himself in front of the bullet because it would have hit me,” Alisha says.

“Ahh. I see. Well, I’m glad he did something useful,” I sarcastically respond. I’m grateful Alisha didn’t get shot, but I’m also still angry that he betrayed us in the first place.

“He was shot in the stomach. I don’t know if we can do anything for him, other than make him a bit more comfortable,” Tonya says.

“Leave him for Michelle to find. Let her take care of him. It will slow her down and help us escape,” I say. “Trevor, don’t breathe a word to her about what we found here.”

“I won’t, Sam.”

“You’d better not. If we find out you betrayed us again, I’ll come up with a very creative solution for the problem,” I grimly reply.

“Michelle and her squad are nearby, so Trevor should be fine, but we need to leave. She’s definitely willing to shoot me and she might shoot the rest of you as well. Is there another door in this building that leads out of here?”

“Yeah we can go out that way,” Tonya says and points to another door. “It leads back to where I was, but we can probably find a way out of there that either lets us avid Michelle or minimizes the chance she’ll see us.”

“Then let’s go and Trevor remember what I said.”

We go out the other door and the coast is clear, though we can hear gunfire nearby. I see medical tents and a few people in them, but they don’t stir as we walk by.
